Bringing the human stories of Ukraine’s resilience to UK audiences

Commissioned by the Ministry of Defence, we created a six-part visual podcast series marking 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, using human-centred storytelling to share experiences of resistance, unity and hope.

Challenge

After almost three years of full-scale war in Ukraine, maintaining public attention presented a growing communications challenge.

As the conflict approached its 1,000th day, MOD wanted to reconnect UK audiences with the human reality behind the headlines.

The challenge was to find a way into an increasingly familiar story that felt personal and relevant, giving audiences a reason to engage with the people and experiences behind the conflict.

Solution

We developed a six-part visual podcast series that shifted the focus from the conflict itself to the people living through it, giving audiences six different perspectives on the realities of war.

The Linguist, The Soldier, The Volunteer, The Headteacher, The Activist and The Digital Defender each brought a different experience to the series, from military service and digital defence to education, culture and community.

Structured around the themes of Resist, Unite and Hope, we used intimate interviews and cinematic production to foreground individual voices and bring audiences closer to the lived experiences behind the conflict.

Our team developed the visual identity and produced the series from pre-production through filming and post-production, alongside graphics and supporting social content designed to extend the stories across digital channels.

Impact

The series gave MOD a collection of long and short-form content through which to mark the 1,000-day milestone with Ukrainian voices at its heart.

Six individual perspectives created different ways for audiences to connect with the conflict, spanning military service, digital defence, education, culture and community.

The visual podcasts and supporting social content formed part of MOD’s wider communications activity around the milestone, providing content that could reach audiences across YouTube and social media.
