Challenge

How do you turn cyber security learning into something people can experience for themselves?

AtkinsRéalis wanted a portable, interactive cyber security experience for small teams that could be used at events and conferences across the country.

Having already developed podcasts, animations and short-form video content for the wider Cyber Confident programme, the challenge was to translate that learning into a completely different format, one that encouraged people to participate, collaborate and put their cyber security knowledge into practice.

Solution

Working with AtkinsRéalis and specialist build partner ArcStream, we helped develop a portable, team-based game that placed participants at the centre of a simulated cyberattack.

We developed the narrative and drew on characters, visual assets and learning from the wider Cyber Confident content we had already created. Players worked together to identify a malicious hacker attempting to breach an organisation's systems, encountering challenges around passwords, phishing, device use and social media security along the way.

Our understanding of military audiences helped shape how that learning translated into the experience. We remained involved throughout development, reviewing and testing the game with AtkinsRéalis and ArcStream and refining elements before the final version was delivered.

The result brought cyber security learning into a fast-paced, collaborative environment while reinforcing a simple message: protecting an organisation from cyber threats is everyone's responsibility.

Impact

The Escape Room gave AtkinsRéalis and MOD Cyber Security a portable, reusable tool that could be used internally for cyber security learning and externally at events and conferences.

By turning key cyber security messages into practical, team-based challenges, participants could apply their knowledge across scenarios covering passwords, phishing, device use and social media security.

The experience also extended the wider Cyber Confident programme into a new format while keeping the learning, characters and visual identity consistent across the campaign.
